The IEEE announced today that Tom Parks and Jim McClellan have been awarded the 2004 Kilby Medal for Signal Processing. Medals are the highest awards the IEEE presents. For those that don't know them, Tom Parks was a faculty member in the Department and Jim McClellan was one of his students. They are famous for what is known outside of Rice as the Parks-McClellan filter design algorithm. At Rice and in Matlab, the algorithm is known as the Remez exchange algorithm (Matlab function REMEZ). Tom is now at Cornell and Jim at Georgia Tech.

The IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal was established by the Board of Directors in 1995 and may be presented 'for outstanding achievements in signal processing.' The achievement may be theoretical, technological or commercial.

The Medal is named in honor of Jack S. Kilby. His innovation was a monumental precursor to the development of the signal processor and digital signal processing.
