Professor Bill Wilson works in the area of semiconductor and electro-optic devices. Currently he and his graduate students are developing a new way to manufacture zinc selenide. This material has the ability to produce blue light as both a light-emitting diode (LED) and as a laser. Such devices could find use in full-color flat-panel displays as well as in extremely high-density optical memories. Right now the only way to make this material is through the very expensive process of molecular beam epitaxy. Using an excimer laser, Professor Wilson and his students are investigating a much less expensive process called metal-organic vapor deposition for fabricating devices from this material.

Professor Wilson is also involved in characterizing and evaluating new methods for designing and manufacturing integrated circuits. Working with Professors Cavallaro and Tittel, he is investigating new methods for performing photolithography of integrated circuits.
